Anyway, when Julene ordered a cake she requested tropical flowers. Becky and Julene love Hawaii, they have traveled there together, I've spent time with her as well, so it's not too surprising that tropical flowers were her decoration of choice But I wanted to do something special for them that expanded on the floral theme. They both love dogs; so, with tropical flowers as the focal point, I tried to build the cakes to include something to make the cake stand out a little more. We discussed a large cake, small cakes and all kinds of options since this would be presented to Becky at work. We finally settled on cupcakes and I made Becky her own little cake that she could either share or take home. The cupcakes are vanilla with a coconut custard filling and chocolate chocolate chip with mocha buttercream. All of the cupcakes are topped with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. The dogs are made of fondant and they are entirely edible save for the piece of dried pasta holding some of the larger pieces in place. The inspiration for the dogs came from Maisie Parrish, an Australian author who is amazing with her creativity and ideas. She's one of my favorites when it comes to molding figures. Her book Fun and Original Character Cakes features a chapter on the dogs I used for Becky's cake.
Anyway, back to my dog-loving birthday girl...I found a picture taken from college where I made a cake for Becky and my sister jointly since their birthdays are a day apart. You will see that my skills have improved to some degree even as the people I bake for stay constant in my life...fortunately, some things never change :)
